How to Hip-Healthy Swaddle Your Baby

Are you swaddling your baby properly?

Improper swaddling may lead to hip dysplasia. When in the womb the baby's legs are in a fetal position with the legs bent up and across each other. Sudden straightening of the legs to a standing position can loosen the joints and damage the soft cartilage of the socket.

Dr. Price, from the International Hip Dysplasia Institute (IHDI), explains why special attention should be paid to how your baby is swaddled to prevent hip dysplasia, and multiple hip-healthy swaddling methods are demonstrated.

For further information on hip-healthy swaddling and how to prevent hip dysplasia please visit:

What Is Hip Dysplasia?

What Is Hip Dysplasia?

Hip dysplasia means that the bones of the hip joint are not aligned correctly. It affects thousands of children and adults each year and is known by many different names:

Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH)
Hip Dislocation
Congenital Dislocation of the Hip (CDH)
Loose Hips
Hip dysplasia prevents the hip joint from functioning properly and the joint wears out much faster than normal, much like a car's tires will wear out faster when out of alignment. It is also a "silent" condition that means pain is not normally felt until much later stages, making it harder to detect.

Hip Dysplasia in children (DDH) - is commonly referred to as Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH), approximately 1 out of every 20 full-term babies has some hip instability and 2-3 out of every 1,000 infants will require treatment. In spite of the frequency of DDH in babies and the potential for life-long disability caused by DDH, the awareness of this condition is poor outside of the medical profession.

Early diagnosis, prevention, and simple treatment is the best solution, however many hip dislocations are difficult to treat with the current methods of care.

About Kylee

Kylee was born Jan 20.2008 and was a beautiful healthy winter baby. Kylee is currently 3 ½ and loves life. She loves to run and play and sing like every other kid. We recently found out that Kylee has Hip Dysplasia, which means her hip bones are dislocated and will need surgeries to fix and mold her hips back together to hopefully one day be able to move around just like you and me.

Kylee's 1st surgery is booked for Oct 17 2011 at Sick kids Hospital by Dr. Wedge, head of Orthopedic department at Sick Kids. After a major surgery, Kylee will be in a body cast (Spica cast) from her chest to her ankles and not be able to move around on her own or even sit up. As Kylee’s Mother,I have quit my job to look after my beautiful little girl and give her the support she will so badly need.

If all goes well, Kylee will go for her 2nd surgery on Dec 2 2011 and from there will be in the same body cast til' mid Feb and then will have to begin the long road of relearning everything she had worked so hard on learning as a tot: walking, crawling, and possibly even toilet training and what ever other surprises may come up during this period.

This is going to be very hard on Kylee as she has no idea anything is wrong with her and as of right now can walk and run and play like all the other kids. But on Oct 17 her life is going to forever change as she will dance into the hosptal, loving life, without a care in the world, but she will wake up and be trapped in a body cast and not be able to move or sit for 4-6mths. We will do everything in our power to make Kylee happy and enjoy every moment that she can be the sad reality is she is going to miss out on so much.

Please feel free to take the time to learn about this condition that effect 1000’s of people and babies all over the world @ http://www.hipdysplasia.org/ if we can even just raise awareness with Kylee's story we are doing our part. Kylee also has a facebook page to support her, feel free to join Team Kylee & Hip Dysplasia Awareness @ https://www.facebook.com/pages/Team-Kylee-Hip-Dysplasia-Awareness/276422392382555

Thank You for taking the time to learn about Kylee’s story, she is amazing little girl.

Sincerely,

Dallas & Shannon Dutchyn
